"Remote software update", which is what bmw are talking about with idrive 7 is completely different and actually updates all of the ecus in your car.Īnd unfortunately no, any x3 produced up till never does not have it. It was used up to idrive 6 to make sure new phones worked when they came out.

That page you linked to is the OLD Bluetooth/phone update page. So far, I haven't actually heard of anyone actually getting them, but it seems like we can.Īnyone have any luck? Especially in the US where I am?

So, based on BMW communications, X3s with iDrive 7 should get OTA updates.not just maps, but full software updates. For my 2020 X3e, it said "your BMW will be updated automatically" and no update is necessary at this time.

I went to and found this page where you can check for software updates for your vehicle by entering the VIN. Today, there's this article saying that BMW is rolling out updates for iDrive 7 to 1.3 million vehicles (made up of 20 models). Recently, there was an update from BMW in an email that said all iDrive 7 systems will get OTA software updates, even showing a "Software Update" tab on the app. So there are tons of threads on this, but everything I've read points in all different directions. And no complaints from me about this, I knew all this before I ordered my MY21. So every time you read something about "iDrive7 vehicles are getting blah blah feature" - remember to read it as "iDrive 7 vehicles except BMW X3". The LCI might add in most of this missing hardware (and possibly balance it by adding some ugliness). Is it missing OTA because of this - could be. They updated the software to iDrive 7, but the X3 cannot have certain things like every other BMW iDrive 7 vehicle. Which is why it does not have digital key support.

As a result, some hardware is missing in current gen X3. The next one was the 2019 X5, which got iDrive 7 with the new screen layout. They still hadn't figured out iDrive 7 by then. They released the current gen X3 as 2018 model.

Most people call it iDrive 6.5, I gave it some extra points because I don't care about the missing stuff. Not sure where you are coming up with 6.75? Not saying whether it will get OTA, but I have a loaded 2020 X5 and it’s features mirror 98% of my 2021 X3 except the full driving assistant (able to back out you car remembering how you pulled in, and remote start) The menus are the same and completely different from iDrive 6.x.Īll in good fun - it's an inside joke.
